Third Nature is an interactive installation I designed while attending College for Creative Studies. Students were directed to research transhumanism and “What it means to be human in 2016”. From our research, we each had to choose a topic and create an interactive installation communicating that research.

I chose to design an installation based on the CRISPR-Cas9 technology by allowing users to “design a baby”. Using a wire, the user makes 23 decisions based on the standard 23 human chromosomes. The wire acts as a visual representation of each user’s personal decisions and how those decisions would have a lasting affect the human race. For example, as you can see in the images above, most users chose darker hair and green eyes for their children. As you can imagine, if these decisions were made on a much larger scale, most humans would only have dark hair and green eyes. The last decision triggers a sound bite to play, encouraging users to educate themselves further at the sources pictured at the end of the installation.

Fun fact: I researched each chromosome and, to the best of my ability, had each topic/decision be related to a gene found on each chromosome… but with a cheeky sci-fi twist - like night vision or titanium-infused bones.
